In a decision released today, the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) ruled that the registration of six trademarks belonging to the Washington Redskins football team “must be cancelled because they were disparaging to Native Americans at the respective times they were registered.” The decision can be accessed here.
Today’s ruling does not prevent the team from continuing to use the trademarks. An appeal is expected.
Fitch Even attorneys will report on this decision in more detail in an upcoming alert.
